We are currently living in weird times. Grocery shelves are scant from necessities and one can easily tell who the hoarders are during check out. I hope it calms down for all of us soon. I hope this pie crust recipe brings some comfort.
The main ingredients to make pie dough are flour, butter, and water. Salt and sugar are only used for flavoring.

I’ve included two instructions for pie crust using a food processor and pie crust by hand in the recipe below.
This pie crust has no shortening and uses all butter, but what if you don’t have butter? Oil can be used as a substitute as well as shortening. The texture of crust is different depending on what fat is used for the recipe.
The trick for a flaky pie crust is to always keep all your ingredients cold and don’t over incorporate your fat in the flour.

Easy Homemade Pie Crust - buttery and flaky
Ingredients
- 1 cup flour
- 1 teaspoon teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 teaspoon sugar optional
- 1/2 cup medium cubed butter frozen
- 1/4 cup water with 1 ice cube
Instructions
- Instructions by Hand
- Combine dry ingredients in a bowl
- Mix with whisk or spatula
- Chill in freezer least 5-10 minutes
- Add butter, combine to evenly distribute
- Add water and combine with fork
- Dump on lightly flour surface
- knead lightly to combine ingredients
- check consistency
- pie dough should not be wet but still hold together when squeezed
- add water per teaspoon if needed
- shape into a disk
- wrap pie dough with plastic wrap
- store in refrigerator at least 30 minutes or freezer
- use as needed
- Instructions for Food Processor
- Add all dry ingredients bowl
- Pulse about 5 times to combine
- Remove from base
- Place bowl in freezer for 5 minutes
- Attach bowl to processor
- Add butter and pulse 5 times
- Add 4 tablespoons water
- pulse 5 times
- check consistency
- pie dough should not be wet but still hold together when squeezed
- add water per teaspoon if needed
- dump dough on lightly floured surface
- shape into disk
- wrap pie dough with plastic wrap
- store in refrigerator for at least 30 minutes or freezer
- use as needed
